FROM CANOVA TO CANOVA: A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE GALLERIA BORGHESE AND THE GALLERIA NAZIONALE D’ARTE MODERNA E CONTEMPORANEA

Galleria Borghese and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea announce a new collaboration dedicated to Antonio Canova, offering the public an exclusive opportunity to deepen their understanding of the great master of Neoclassicism. This initiative, which ideally connects the two museums through the Villa Borghese Park, includes a special offer: visitors who present a Borghese Gallery ticket will receive a discounted entry (10 euros) to the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea on the same day.

The program also includes a seminar (date to be announced) exploring figurative art housed in both institutions, and a special screening of the 2018 documentary Canova by Francesco Invernizzi—featuring Vittorio Sgarbi and Mario Guderzo—scheduled for May 28, 2025, at 6:00 PM at the Casa del Cinema.

Thanks to this initiative, visitors will have the opportunity to discover Canova through a complete cultural experience that combines firsthand viewing of his works, expert insights, and immersive storytelling through film.

CANOVA’S MASTERPIECES IN BOTH MUSEUMS

At the Galleria Borghese, visitors can admire one of Canova’s greatest masterpieces: Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix(1805–1808). Commissioned in 1804 by Prince Camillo Borghese and completed in 1808, the sculpture celebrates the idealized beauty of the noblewoman, portrayed in a pose that is both sensual and solemn, inspired by classical depictions of Venus. The work exemplifies Canova’s extraordinary ability to transform marble into living matter, with an exceptional rendering of surfaces and details—from the polished skin to the soft drapery enveloping the princess’s body.

At the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, the public can encounter the dramatic force of Hercules and Lichas (1795–1815), a monumental sculptural group in which the power of myth is expressed through a composition of extraordinary dynamism. It is the first of Canova’s colossal statues.
