MUSEUM TALES

MUSEUM TALES

In collaboration with the Istituto Statale per Sordi, the state institute for the deaf, since May 2019 the Borghese Gallery has been running the pilot project Museum Tales. Trails for the deaf and signers in the Borghese Gallery. This is organized into two series of meetings: one, already finished, was on Bernini, while the other is about Caravaggio.

The project outlines thematic trails in the collection, entrusted to art historians who are either deaf or can hear and are signers, with a view to creating, through art, opportunities for socialization, helping to overcome prejudice towards disability. This is an innovative initiative because it has been conceived both for the deaf and for those who can hear. It has therefore been realized both in Italian and in Italian Sign Language, in order to facilitate interpersonal relations between people with different perceptions. By placing Italian Sign Language at the centre, the handicap disappears and in a bilingual context the museum is transformed into a utopia, creating, albeit temporarily, a place where inclusion becomes possible and differences are a source of enrichment.

The second series is devoted to Caravaggio. It began in November 2019 and the final session is on Thursday 20 February. During the Museum Tales, the works by Caravaggio in the gallery’s collection are compared with the great master’s other paintings in Rome. It is an invitation to continue the trail outside the gallery, in the city’s churches and museums.

The final session is on Thursday 20 February from 18.00 to 19.30.

Museum Tales will resume in the spring with other thematic trails.
