A Bird: Red Cardinal

tuscan school

The small panel, in the Collection since the end of the seventeenth century, has some parts in scagliola, the sign of an old restoration. The bird has been identified as a red cardinal, a species of American origin that attests to the exotic and, above all, unusual taste of the author of the cartoon, hypothetically identified as the scientific draughtsman Jacopo Ligozzi due to the zoological interest of the representation.
