Adam
(Venice c. 1470 - after 1530)
The panel is a pendant to the one with Eve (inv. 131). In 1925, the panels were assigned to a disciple of Titian, Marco Basaiti, an attribution subsequently accepted by scholars.
There are clear references to the engraving, drawings, and paintings portraying the same subjects by the great German artist Albrecht Dürer before, during, and right after his second stay in Venice (1505-1507): for example, the ox and the rabbits, derived from a 1504 print. The two animals symbolise, respectively, the stolid indolence and the fiery sensuality that were to enthral mankind after their sin.
