Adoration of the Child
Della Porta Bartolomeo called Fra Bartolomeo
(Prato 1472 - Florence 1517)
The painting, whose attribution has long been discussed, is now generally agreed to be the work of a young Fra’ Bartolomeo. The panel has a grand overall scheme that reflects a move towards the new sixteenth-century sensibility, and is of crucial important for figurative trends at the end of the fifteenth century. Fra’ Bartolomeo interpreted the circular format of the support in a three-dimensional key, with the bodies and objects firmly set in the space, although unified in a Leonardesque atmospheric rendering.
