Adoration of the Shepherds

da Ponte Jacopo called Jacopo Bassano
(Bassano del Grappa 1510 - 1592)

We know that in 1650, together with six others by the same artist, the painting was already on display in one of the rooms of the Villa. The Adoration of the Shepherds is conceived diagonally, which is useful for the division of the figures: on the left the Holy Family and on the right the group of shepherds with their animals. There is nothing ceremonial about the scene; on the contrary, as in other works by Bassano, the artist has intentionally sought an atmosphere of peasant familiarity.
