Deposition of Christ

Bassetti Marcantonio
(Verona 1586 - 1630)

The painter is recorded in Rome together with Alessandro Turchi, with whom he worked for Scipione Borghese in the villa and for easel works like this Deposition of Christ, in which it is still possible to detect Venetian influences in the glimmering light. The face of the Virgin, as has been noted, is modelled on examples by Girolamo Savoldo. While remaining faithful to his Veronese training, Bassetti was informed in this work by the Caravaggesque circle in Rome.
