Diana and Actaeon

Cesari Bernardino
(Arpino 1571 - Rome 1622)

The painting was probably an acquisition of Cardinal Scipione Borghese. Mentioned in a short poem describing the collection that was written in 1613, the canvas bears the artist’s signature on a stone. It is a faithful copy of a painting with the same subject that was executed by Bernardino’s brother, Giuseppe Cesari, known as the Cavalier d’Arpino, of which there are various versions. The artist’s signature is of great interest, as very few works can be ascribed to him with certainty.
