Life of Joseph: the Search for the Stolen Cup

Ubertini Francesco called Bachiacca

(Borgo San Lorenzo 1494 - Florence 1557)

Mentioned in the middle of the seventeenth century as being in the Palazzina and by Raphael, and later ascribed to Giulio Romano and Orazio Gentileschi, the four episodes from the Life of Joseph belong in actual fact to the youthful output of Bachiacca. The other three are: the Arrest of his Brothers; the Sale of Joseph; and the Finding of the Stolen Cup. The panels formed part of the decoration of the celebrated bridal chamber of Pierfrancesco Borgherini, commissioned in 1515 for his marriage to Margherita Acciaiuoli. The complex of works, now dispersed, was articulated in a series of painted panels depicting the life of Joseph, ascribed to various artists and set into wooden decorative furnishings by Baccio d’Agnolo. Bachiacca’s small panels probably decorated the pedestal of the marriage bed.
