Lot and His Daughters
Guerrieri Giovanni Francesco
(Fossombrone 1589 - Pesaro 1655)
The painting is part of a series of overdoors for the Borghese mansion in the Campo Marzio. The subject comes from Genesis (19, 30-38): the story of Lot and his family fleeing Sodoma in flames. When his wife was transformed into a statue of salt after looking back at the city, the elderly father was left alone with his two daughters in a cave. To save the human race, the two girls got their father drunk and took turns lying with him, who unknowingly participated in the incest. .
