Negretti Jacopo called Jacopo Palma the Elder
(Serina c. 1480 - Venice 1528)

The painting is documented as a work belonging to Cardinal Scipione Borghese. A very popular iconographic theme during the 16th and 17th centuries, the subject is drawn from the legendary episode of Roman history whose protagonist was Lucretia, the virtuous wife of Collatinus. Abused by Tarquin the Proud’s son, the noblewoman killed herself, thus inducing the Romans to revolt and drive out the tyrants. In this work – of which other versions are known – the artist renews his pictorial craft, based on the models of Bellini and Giorgione, through the lesson of Titian’s extraordinary use of colour.
