Portrait of a Boy

Bernini Gian Lorenzo
(Naples 1598 - Rome 1680)

The painting, from the collection of Prince Chigi, was acquired by the Italian State in 1919.

The portrait is extremely important both for documenting Bernini’s little-known work as a painter and for seventeenth-century portraiture as a whole. It is a family portrait of a boy around 12 years old whose identity is unknown. It was executed purely as a painting exercise, with the vibrant complexion and thick head of hair resembling the rendering of the artist’s sculpted surfaces.
