Portrait of a woman
northern Italian school
Mentioned beginning in 1833, with a number of attributions to painters from Venetia and Lombardia, the painting does seem to have been executed by an artist from northern Italy. No longer young, the woman is lavishly dressed, as seen in the elegant blouse tied under her neck, the cloak, and the headpiece. In the background, barely visible, is an ancient krater, a detail indicating that she belongs to a high social class.
