Portrait of Francesca Sforza di Santafiora

Del Conte Jacopino
(Florence 1510 - Rome 1598)

The work is an interesting indication of Jacopino Del Conte’s success in Rome as a portrait painter in the service of the city’s most prominent families. He was an artist favoured by Pope Paul III Farnese, and worked mainly for the Colonna and Orsini families. The latter is connected with the present painting, which was recently identified as a portrait of Francesca di Bosio Sforza di Santafiora, mother of Paolo Giordano I – the spouse of Isabella de’ Medici – and widow, as indicated by her veil, of Girolamo Orsini, who died on 3 November 1540. The identification was made possible by the replica housed in the Sforza Cesarini palazzo, which bears an inscription with her name. November 1540. The identification was made possible by the replica housed in the Sforza Cesarini palazzo, which bears an inscription with her name.
