Portrait of Laura Dianti
Vecellio Tiziano, copy after
(Pieve di Cadore 1488-90 - Venice 1576)
The painting is a partial replica of Titian’s work of c. 1523 (Kisters collection, Kreutzlingen). The lady portrayed, Laura Dianti (c. 1480 -1573), became the lover of Alfonso I d’Este (1476-1534) after the death in 1519 of his second wife, Lucrezia Borgia. The relationship began before 1524, led to the birth of two sons – subsequently legitimated by the duke – and ended with their marriage when the duke was on his deathbed.
