Portrait of Petrarch

copy after Bonsignori Francesco

(Verona c. 1460 - Caldiero 1519)

The painting, long thought to the work of Holbein and then variously attributed, can be considered a derivation of a lost prototype by Francesco Bonsignori. Unfortunately, there are very few surviving works by the Veronese painter, known for a busy career as a portraitist. The subject, as the inscription on the parapet attests, is the poet Petrarch (1303–1374), depicted in profile and standing out against the light.
