Saint Stephen
Raibolini Francesco called Francesco Francia
Bologna c. 1450. - 1517)
The panel is executed extremely well.
Portrayed with his dalmatic, the deacon Stephen is praying, while his expression invites the observer to follow his example. On the ground are stones symbolising his martyrdom, also alluded to by the blood running from his head. The Bolognese landscape in the background represents the Reno Valley, which the artist also uses in other works.
