The Adoration of the Child

Pellegrini Pellegrino called Pellegrino Tibaldi
(Purio di Valsolda 1527 - Milan 1597)

The Adoration was part of the collection of Scipione Borghese. Signed and dated, it is one of the most representative paintings of so-called mature Mannerism, which emerged in Rome towards the middle of the sixteenth century. The painting is of crucial importance for reconstructing Tibaldi’s youthful experiences, as this is his first documented work. The artist’s approach and style was influenced greatly by Michelangelo and by direct dealings with the latter’s followers.
