The preaching of Saint John the Baptist

Caliari Paolo called Paolo Veronese
(Verona 1528 - Venice 1588)

Like the painting portraying St. Anthony of Padua Preaching (inv.101), in 1607 the canvas was sent by the Patriarch of Aquileia as a gift to Cardinal Scipione Borghese. The composition of the work is extremely innovative with regard to both the figure of the Baptist – significantly placed at the center – and the perspective split up on three successive planes. The “backlit” effect on the preacher highlights Veronese’s chromatic technique, based on the innovation of “colored shadows” obtained through the juxtaposition of pure colors and contrasts between warm and cool hues, according to a principle identified by Leonard and adopted by modern painting.
