The Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine of Siena
(Siena c. 1563 - 1610)
The work is mentioned in the 1642 inventory of the inheritance of Ortensia Santacroce, the wife of Francesco Borghese. The source erroneously indicates the presence of Francesco, confusing him with St. Joseph, who is portrayed together with the Madonna with Child, St. John the Evangelist, and St. Catherine of Siena. In 1833 the name of Francesco Vanni was proposed, an attribution accepted by scholars because of the indubitable influence of Barocci, observable particularly in the figure of the Child and in the use of vivid colours.
