The Saviour

Carracci Agostino, follower
Bologna 1557 - Parma 1602)

The painting portrays one of the themes most congenial to the Bolognese sensibility of the first decades of the 17th century, as well as one of the most beloved in the devotional atmosphere of the time. The enormous success of this subject stemming from the study of classical statuary is documented by the incalculable number of copies and derivations. With tears running down his face and the crown of thorns on his head, Christ looks sad and is tight-lipped: useful means for arousing compassion in the faithful.
