The Autumn
da Ponte Jacopo called Jacopo Bassano
(Bassano del Grappa 1510 - 1592)
The series is mentioned as belonging to the Collection beginning with Manilli in 1650. At that time the paintings were part of the group of thirteen canvases attributed generically to the Bassano family. Not all scholars attribute the Seasons group only to Jacopo, the founder of an eminent family of painters, but the paintings are stylistically comparable to numerous works with a biblical-pastoral subject executed in Bassano’s studio. In the canvases every season is represented with figures and animals connected with rural tasks of the different periods of the year.
