Il dipinto è  citato nella collezione a partire da un documento del 1613. Già ritenuta della mano di Tiziano, la tela è in realtà opera di un seguace  di Bonifacio de' Pitati. Nella  composizione sono presenti  caratteristici toni narrativi, desunti dalla pittura di cassoni e da suggestioni nordiche, verosimilmente assorbite attraverso il mezzo della grafica. Nell’uomo rivestito di corazza, presente nel gruppo sulla destra, si può ritrovare una citazione testuale dalla Pala di Castelfranco Veneto di Giorgione.
