TO EXIST AS A WOMAN. A SERIES OF EVENTS DEDICATED TO THE EXHIBITION “WANGECHI MUTU. BLACK SOIL POEMS”

To Exist as a Woman” is a program of six events, conceived and organized in collaboration with Electa and Fondamenta. Foundation for the Arts and Culture, designed to explore the themes of the exhibition “Black Soil Poems” by artist Wangechi Mutu, on view from June 10 to September 14, 2025.

The calendar opens on Wednesday, June 11 at 11:00 AM in the gardens of Galleria Borghese, the day after the exhibition’s inauguration, with a conversation featuring Wangechi Mutu, Francesca Cappelletti (museum director), and Cloé Perrone (exhibition curator).

The following events will take place at 6:00 PM under the Galleria’s portico, and will address key themes in the Kenyan-American artist’s work, such as new mythologies, gender issues, power, sexuality, and colonial history. June 18 will focus on the relationship between nature and art, while July 2 will delve into artistic reflection in relation to history and politics. The program concludes on July 16 with a discussion centered on the cultural and historical dynamics of decolonization.

Two events will take place outside the museum, in collaboration with the American Academy in Rome. On June 23 at 6:00 PM, a screening of a series of short films and videos by and about Wangechi Mutu will be held at Casa del Cinema in Villa Borghese. On June 25, a guided tour will be offered of the artwork Shavasana I, installed in the atrium of the American Academy in Rome among ancient Roman funerary inscriptions—an evocative setting where Mutu’s bronze figure reflects on themes of death, abandonment, and the dignity of existence.

With a rich and varied program, “To Exist as a Woman” offers the public a unique opportunity to explore the thematic and symbolic universe of one of the most important voices in contemporary international art, constantly engaging with the present and with history.

Participation in the events is free and does not include access to the exhibition. Booking is required, subject to availability, on this website a few days before each event.
