The Borghese Gallery has launched a major fundraising drive with Art Bonus to acquire a masterpiece by Gian Lorenzo Bernini – the bronze bust of Urban VIII (Maffeo Barberini), produced in 1658 for Cardinal Antonio Barberini.

This is an unrepeatable opportunity to enrich the collection of the gallery, and the whole national heritage, with a work by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the artist’s most closely identified with Italy’s artistic heritage.

Of exceptional quality, the bust depicts Urban VIII, a figure closely linked with the story of the collection of Scipione Borghese, for whom he was the theoretical inspiration. He conceived of and offered commentary on the themes represented by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the monumental sculptures the artist realized at a very early age for the Villa Borghese, where they still are today.

A prominent position will be reserved for the work in the collection, and all donors will receive official mention if they so wish.
