Portrait of Pope Julius II

copy after Sanzio, Raphael

(Urbino 1483 - Rome 1520)

It was not until 1980 that the painting was identified with certainty as a copy after the original by Raphael, which also belonged to the Borghese collection until the late eighteenth century and is now in the National Gallery, London. Compared to the original, the Borghese work, produced in Roman circles, has a more marked chiaroscuro.
