TO EXIST AS A WOMAN – A CONVERSATION BETWEEN ARTIST WANGECHI MUTU AND FRANCESCA CAPPELLETTI

“To Exist as a Woman” is a six-part program, conceived and organized in collaboration with Electa and Fondamenta. Fondazione per le arti e la cultura. It aims to delve deeper into the themes of the “Black Soil Poems” exhibition by artist Wangechi Mutu, scheduled from June 10 to September 14, 2025.
The first event will take place on Wednesday, June 11, at 11:00 AM in the gardens of the Galleria Borghese, the day after the exhibition’s opening. This meeting will feature Wangechi Mutu in dialogue with Francesca Cappelletti, the museum’s director, and Cloé Perrone, the exhibition’s curator.
Wangechi Mutu has participated in several major solo exhibitions in institutions worldwide. The most recent include “Wangechi Mutu: Intertwined” at the New Museum in New York (2023) and the New Orleans Museum of Art (2024); “Thinking Historically in the Present” at the Sharjah Biennial (2023), United Arab Emirates; “Wangechi Mutu” at the Storm King Art Center (2021); “The Façade Commission: Wangechi Mutu, The NewOnes, will free Us” at the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York (2019-2020); and “Wangechi Mutu: I Am Speaking, Are You listening?” at The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (2021), Legion of Honor Museum.
Francesca Cappelletti is a Full Professor of Modern Art History and the Director of Galleria Borghese. She has contributed to the organization, curating, and catalog editing of numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Among the most recent are “Caravaggio 2025” at Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica – Palazzo Barberini, and “Barocco Globale. Il mondo a Roma nel secolo di Bernini”, at Scuderie del Quirinale. Her most recent book is “Le belle. Ritratti femminili nelle stanze del potere”, Mondadori, 2024.
Cloé Perrone is an independent curator and PhD candidate at Scuola IMT Alti Studi Lucca. She has curated exhibitions at Galleria Borghese (Rome), Fondazione Chigi Zondadari (Siena), Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro (Milan), MADRE (Naples), and Fondazione Memmo (Rome). She served as assistant curator at the 58th Venice Art Biennale and as a Research Scholar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
