“GALLERIA BORGHESE AND ITS PUBLICS, 1888-1938”. THE CONCLUSIVE CONFERENCE FOR THE RESEARCH PROJECT (PRIN 2022) WILL BE LIVE-STREAMED ON THE MUSEUM’S CHANNELS

On September 29, Galleria Borghese will host the final conference for the National Relevant Interest Project (PRIN 2022), titled “Galleria Borghese and its publics, 1888-1938”.

Under the scientific direction of Lucia Simonato, the project, funded by the European Union–Next Generation EU, has involved three universities since 2023: Scuola Normale Superiore (with the participation of Alessandro Del Puppo), the University of Palermo, and the University of Naples “Federico II” (under the responsibility of Alexander Auf der Heyde and Sandro Morachioli, respectively). The project’s goal was to delve into the history of the museum from its complex transition to state ownership up to the start of World War II. This was a crucial fifty-year period for the institutional establishment of Borghese, the new appreciation of its collections, and the development in Italy of the concept of protection and cultural heritage.

Based on a careful investigation of the Galleria’s historical archive, which is still largely unexplored and is now being digitized, and thanks to multiple extra-museum analyses (including a review of magazines from the period and an examination of contemporary European literary and artistic production), significant in-depth studies have been conducted over the last two years by Pier Ludovico Puddu, Vanda Lisanti, William Cortes Casarrubios and Claudio Gulli. These research fellows for the project have been tasked with introducing and moderating the day’s four sections, which will focus on the museum’s organization, the role of the media, and the artists and writers who frequented it.

The conference, curated by Francesca Cappelletti and Lucia Simonato, will provide a multi-perspective view of how the public of Borghese was defined between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thanks to the participation of scholars from various disciplines. The conference will show that the public was not a uniform mass but a multiplicity of viewpoints that helped create a collective subtext about the museum, offering a highly dynamic image.

It will be possible to watch the conference on the channels of Galleria Borghese and Scuola Normale Superiore.

All details will be announced closer to the date on this page and on social media channels.
