BOOK PRESENTATION: GIUOCO DE L’IMPRESE DEL CAVALIER ALESSIO DE GL’HORATIJ
On Monday, February 23, 2026, at 5:30 PM, the presentation of the volume Giuoco de l’imprese del Cavalier Alessio de gl’Horatij by Francesco Guidi, published by UniversItalia, will take place.
The book, presented by Carmelo Occhipinti and Alessandra Pattanaro, reintroduces a little-known short poem by a now-forgotten author, the knight Alessio degli Orazi. In a single ottava (stanza), the text offers a sort of “catalogue” of the most highly regarded artists in Bologna around the mid-sixteenth century: Michelangelo, Prospero Fontana, Bastianino, Primaticcio, Titian, Vasari, Mirola, Tibaldi, Giacomo Francia, an enigmatic Pietro with his sons, Salviati, Ercole Procaccini and Daniele da Volterra.
This list alternates between first printed records, predictable confirmations, surprising absences and presences that are difficult to explain, providing fresh perspectives for future studies on the history of art criticism. The work is set on a summer day in the countryside, among ladies and knights, arms and loves, against the backdrop of the culture of emblems, shortly before the publication of Achille Bocchi’s Symbolicae Quaestiones.
