RAFFAELLO, TIZIANO, RUBENS. MASTERPIECES FROM GALLERIA BORGHESE AT PALAZZO BARBERINI

RAFFAELLO, TIZIANO, RUBENS. MASTERPIECES FROM GALLERIA BORGHESE AT PALAZZO BARBERINI

From March 29th to June 30th, 2024, Galleria Borghese and Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica are joining forces in an unprecedented collaboration. This aims to allow the public to continue enjoying the heritage preserved on the first floor of the museum, which has been temporarily relocated to the prestigious halls of the South Wing of the noble floor of Palazzo Barberini.

Galleria Borghese has embarked on an ambitious renovation and conservation project made possible by funding from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). This project includes, after the restoration of the facades, the replacement of tapestries, and the modernization of fixtures with energy efficiency in mind, the expansion of cultural accessibility, the updating of storage facilities, and the restoration of some large canvases. The multiplicity and complexity of these interventions have necessitated the transfer of a portion of the paintings to Palazzo Barberini. However, Galleria Borghese will never fully close its doors, as it will remain open to showcase all the ground floor rooms with the celebrated paintings by Caravaggio, the Bernini sculpture groups, and many other masterpieces.

This initiative also presents a unique and unmissable opportunity to foster a dialogue between two collections that share a similar history, linked to two crucial figures in the political and cultural life of seventeenth-century Rome, Scipione Borghese and Maffeo Barberini. This initiative aims to create an ideal historical, cultural, and even geographical proximity, given the short walking distance between the two locations.

Therefore, in this exceptional setting, paintings such as Tiziano’s “Sacred and Profane Love,” Antonello da Messina’s “Portrait of a Man,” Raphael’s “Lady with a Unicorn,” Peter Paul Rubens’s “Susanna and the Elders,” and other artworks will be transferred.

Throughout the entire exhibition period, there will be a significant discount on tickets.
