vedovamazzei. RAPHAEL THE WESTERN
vedovamazzei (Simeone Crispino and Stella Scala) are called in to take on Raphael, whose work is also and simultaneously the subject of an extensive exhibition at the Galleria Borghese.
The two artists have taken a cinematographic approach for their idea, an explosive encounter between the painter’s work, which established a new artistic language and visual code in the Western world, and the Wild West.
A caravan traveling through the West carries Raphael’s Portrait of a Lady with a Unicorn. A Sioux native sneaks into the caravan and comes across the painting: an iconic image of art seen through different eyes, and whose known meaning is violated in the eyes of the viewer, becomes the bearer of possible messages.
vedovamazzei use a variety of techniques and mediums to disorient the viewer with respect to the usual codes. Everyday reality or cultural myths are mocked or blighted, to mix up roles or highlight fictions and contradictions.
Raphael the Western, and the entire series of works created for the project, Committenze Contemporanee, is intended for loan to the MAXXI museum in Rome.
