The Borghese and Music
BAROQUE MUSIC CONCERT: LIVIA SPINOLA BORGHESE AND HER VIRTUOSO MUSICIANS
On the occasion of the Christmas holidays we are offering all our visitors the chance to see and hear the concert “Livia Spinola Borghese and her virtuoso musicians”, organised as part of the project “The Borghese and Music”, aimed at investigating and outlining the Borghese family’s relations with music and musicians, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The programme of this concert aims to investigate the network of relations that linked, through musical patronage, Princess Maria Livia Spinola Borghese to various musicians – Venetian and non-Venetian – who were in the 1820s to present their works in Rome: Benedetto Marcello, Francesco Gasparini and Don Antonio Vivaldi.
Another pivotal figure in the programme is the singer Giovanni Ossi, Virtuoso of Prince Borghese in the decade 1719 – 1729, who was one of the protagonists of the Roman theatre scene in those years.
Today, almost exactly two hundred years after those first performances, we intend with this programme to re-evaluate the role of patron that the Princess was able to play in the Rome of her time. We will mainly be escorting two autograph manuscripts by the Venetian composer Benedetto Marcello (1686 – 1739) containing a total of four Serenatas dedicated expressly to Livia or to the House of Borghese.
