From 20 June to 15 September 2013 the Galleria Borghese and the Soprintendenza Speciale per il Patrimonio Storico, Artistico ed Etnoantropologico e per il Polo Museale di Roma will present the “Candida Höfer for the Galleria Borghese” exhibition.

As part of the Contemporary Commissions project, the German photographer  Candida Höfer was invited to document the reconstruction of the original Borghese collection presented in the “The Borghese Family and Antiquity” exhibition held between 7 December 2011 and 9 April 2012 in cooperation with the Louvre Museum.

After more than fifty years of history of the techniques of photography, the Galleria Borghese possesses an abundant and often high-quality photographic iconography of both its interiors and its exteriors. But Candida Hofer’s seven large-scale photos seem to present the Museum for the first time, because the protagonists of the photos are not only the extraordinary masterpieces of ancient art that once belonged to the collection, but rather the Museum as a whole: its history, furnishings, works – all of which make Hofer’s images unique and the exhibition a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Candida Höfer’s photographs call forth emotions that depend on the historical background, perspective, and luminosity of the Galleria, revealing original aspects of it and elevating the images to an eternal, absolute sphere.
