THE AMOROUS AFFECTIONS is a new musical initiative that will animate the rooms of the Galleria Borghese.
Every first Saturday of the month at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., specialists in historical instruments or young musicians from the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome will offer an immersive music experience of Baroque and 18th century culture in a different room of the museum each time. These concerts, of the duration of about 30 minutes, will feature music contemporary to the works on display or inspired by them.
The concert, MUSES AND METAMORPHOSES– Music and Myths at Galleria Borghese, is Saturday February 8th in Room II at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.
“La Mort de Didon”
Montéclair’s cantata, inspired by the Aeneid, portrays Dido’s final moments. The piece explores the pain of unrequited love and the awareness of a tragic fate, musically translating remorse, anger, and despair. The “Dido Room” at Galleria Borghese, adorned with frescoes by Anton von Maron, depicts key scenes from the story of Aeneas and Dido, including her suicide. This dramatic intensity intertwines music with visual art.
“Pan et Syrinx”
Montéclair’s cantata, inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, narrates Pan’s thwarted love for Syrinx, who transforms into reeds. The music alternates between pastoral serenity and melancholy. Bernini’s sculpture Apollo and Daphne also reflects a vision of transformation as a surrender of freedom. The dialogue between music and sculpture amplifies the feelings of desire and loss inherent in every change.
“La Bergère”
Montéclair’s La Bergère takes the audience into a bucolic world, with the shepherdess symbolizing innocence, harmony, and melancholy. The music evokes an atmosphere of sweetness and longing. Paintings such as Landscape with Shepherds by van Swanevelt and Paul Brill, displayed in the gallery, echo the same serene atmosphere and connection between humanity and nature.
